Kidding date calculator
Goat gestation calculator
Goats are pregnant for about 150 days, usually 145 to 155. Enter the date your doe was bred to see the earliest, expected and latest kidding date; if the buck ran with several does, enter his first and last day in the pen. You can also start from the kidding dates you want and work back to breeding.

Goats: 2026-10-18 + 145 days = 2027-03-12 · + 150 days = 2027-03-17 · 2026-10-18 + 155 days = 2027-03-22 · window 11 days
Nothing you enter leaves your browser. Dates are planning references, not guarantees.
Example: a doe bred on October 18
You saw the buck cover your doe on October 18, 2026. The goat profile adds 145, 150 and 155 days:
Kids could come from: Fri, Mar 12, 2027
Expected kidding: Wed, Mar 17, 2027
Late edge: Mon, Mar 22, 2027
Start watching closely from the early date; an eleven-day window is normal for goats, and a doe carrying triplets tends to kid slightly earlier than one with a single.
Planning backward for spring kids
Want kids between March 15 and April 5, 2027, when grass is coming and the worst cold is over? Subtracting the goat gestation lengths:
Breed in the reference band: Fri, Oct 16, 2026 – Fri, Nov 6, 2026
Outer bounds: Sun, Oct 11, 2026 – Wed, Nov 11, 2026
The dates are arithmetic only. Whether a particular doe can be bred then depends on her breeding season, age, weight and condition.
Which goat gestation length does the calculator use?
- Minimum
- 145 days
- Reference
- 150 days
- Maximum
- 155 days
The range comes from Penn State Extension’s dairy goat production guide, which gives 145 to 155 days with an average of 149. The Livestock Gestation Tracker app rounds the central value to 150 days, the planning figure that Penn State’s small-ruminant nutrition guide and the Merck Veterinary Manual both use, and labels it as a rounded value.
What changes the length of a goat pregnancy?
Breed charts for goats circulate widely online, but we could not find one published by a university or veterinary source, so this table lists what the cited sources actually report:
| Source | What it reports | Days |
|---|---|---|
| Penn State Extension, Dairy goat production | Range and average for does | 145–155, average 149 |
| Merck Veterinary Manual | Average for goats | 150 |
| Penn State Extension, Winter nutrition for small ruminants | Typical length | about 150 |
| Amoah & Bryant (1983) | Each additional kid in the litter | about 0.9 day shorter |
| Amoah & Bryant (1983) | All kids in the litter female | about 1.1 days shorter |
| Amoah & Bryant (1983) | Baseline | differs by breed and herd |
How can I tell my doe is close to kidding?
- The udder fills and tightens over the last days (Merck; University of Arkansas).
- The ligaments around the tail head relax (University of Arkansas Extension).
- Behaviour changes: she separates from the herd, paws or “nests”, talks more than usual and may eat less in the last few hours.
- Discharge: a string of mucus from the vulva often appears as labour approaches.
Once the water bag appears, the NC State cheat sheet expects feet within about 30 minutes, and Merck says the first kid should be born within an hour of strong contractions.
What should I prepare for kidding?
- A clean, dry, draft-free kidding pen with fresh bedding (Merck)
- CDT booster timed for the last weeks of pregnancy, as your veterinarian advises
- Exam and OB gloves, OB lubricant, chlorhexidine scrub, iodine for navels and plenty of towels
- Frozen or fresh colostrum, a feeding tube and syringe, bottle and nipple
- A kid puller only if you know how to use it, and your vet’s and an experienced neighbour’s numbers
The NC State sheet suggests kids receive colostrum equal to about 10% of body weight within the first 24 hours.
When should I call the vet during kidding?
Call for help when labour stops progressing — no kid 30 minutes after the water bag, strong straining with nothing showing, a kid you cannot reposition, or a doe that has not dilated. Merck notes the placenta is normally expelled within 12 hours. An experienced goat keeper nearby is worth knowing too, but do not wait long with a doe in hard labour.
Livestock Gestation Tracker is an organizational aid, not veterinary advice. Reference dates vary by animal, breed, pregnancy and management conditions. Use your own records and your veterinarian or a qualified livestock professional for care decisions.

Questions people ask
How long are goats pregnant?
About five months. Penn State Extension gives 145 to 155 days with an average of 149; the Merck Veterinary Manual gives an average of 150 days. The calculator uses 145, 150 and 155 days.
What is the kidding date if my doe was bred on October 18?
With the 150-day reference she is due around March 17, 2027, and the 145–155-day range puts kidding between March 12 and March 22.
Do Nigerian Dwarf or Boer goats have a different gestation?
We found no university or veterinary table that gives reliable gestation figures breed by breed, so we do not print one. Published research shows litter size and kid sex move the date by a day or so per kid, and the baseline differs between breeds and herds — keep your own herd’s records and add a custom profile in the app if your does run consistently early or late.
When should I give the CDT booster before kidding?
Extension sources put it about two to six weeks before kidding: University of Maryland Extension says two to four weeks, the University of Arkansas about four weeks, Merck four to six weeks. First-time mothers need two doses about four weeks apart. Ask your veterinarian which schedule fits your herd.
Can I plan breeding for spring kids?
Yes. Choose “Plan backward from a birth date”, enter the first and last kidding dates you want, and the calculator gives the breeding dates by subtracting 145 to 155 days.
