Calving date calculator

Cow gestation calculator

A cow carries a calf for about 283 days, usually between 279 and 287. Enter the insemination or breeding date and the calculator shows the expected calving date with its early and late edge; for natural service enter the day the bull went in and came out to get the calving window for the whole herd.

When will my cow calve? Two worked examples

Artificial insemination. A heifer is inseminated on May 12, 2026. Adding the cattle profile’s 279, 283 and 287 days:

Earliest reference: Mon, Feb 15, 2027

Expected calving: Fri, Feb 19, 2027

Latest reference: Tue, Feb 23, 2027

A bull with the herd for ten weeks. The bull goes in on June 1, 2026 and is pulled on August 9. Nobody knows which day each cow settled, so the earliest calf is counted from bull-in and the latest from bull-out:

First possible calf: Sun, Mar 7, 2027

Central band: Thu, Mar 11, 2027 – Wed, May 19, 2027

Last expected calf: Sun, May 23, 2027

Calving season: 78 days

A ten-week breeding season gives you roughly three heat cycles of exposure and a calving season of about eleven weeks. Pregnancy checking later tells you which cows are early or late; record that and the plan narrows.

These are the built-in cattle values of the Livestock Gestation Tracker app, taken from University of Nebraska–Lincoln Beef, which gives a range of 279 to 287 days and says 283 days is common for most breeds. The profile does not adjust for breed or calf sex, so for a herd of a single long- or short-gestation breed you may want to add your own profile in the app.

How long are cows pregnant by breed?

Breed differences of a week or more are well documented. The beef figures come from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s germplasm evaluation as summarized by Virginia Cooperative Extension (means by breed of sire in crossbred calves); the dairy figures are USDA data reprinted in Hoard’s Dairyman, split by first and later calvings.

The same USDA article notes that heifer calves arrive one to two days before bull calves, twins about five days earlier than singles, and calves born in summer about two days sooner than winter-born calves.

What are the signs a cow is about to calve?

Oklahoma State University’s calving fact sheet (E-1006) describes the build-up in stages:

  • Weeks ahead: the udder fills (“making bag”) and the vulva swells and loosens (“springing”). First-calf dairy heifers can start bagging two to three months early.
  • Last two weeks: springing increases, the udder fills further, and the cervical mucus plug may be lost — sometimes weeks before calving.
  • Last 24 hours: the pelvic ligaments either side of the tailhead relax and the teats fill and stand out. In thin or moderate cows relaxed ligaments usually mean calving within 12 to 24 hours; in fat cows they are hard to see.
  • Last 12 hours: the cow may go off feed and walk away from the herd.

What should I have ready before calving starts?

The University of Minnesota Extension recommends assembling the calving kit at least four weeks before the first calf is due — count back from the earliest date the calculator gives, not the expected one. Their list, combined with Oklahoma State’s, includes:

  • Your veterinarian’s phone number where everyone can find it
  • Headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries, halter and rope
  • Long OB sleeves, obstetric lubricant, mild disinfectant and warm water
  • OB chains (one 60-inch or two 30-inch) with two handles; a calf puller only if you are trained to use it
  • Towels, 7% iodine and scissors for the navel, clean straw
  • Colostrum or replacer, an esophageal feeder and a thermometer

Have a clean, well-bedded pen or calving area where you can watch heifers closely; first-calf heifers need help more often than mature cows.

How long should calving take before I call the vet?

Oklahoma State gives practical time limits. The first stage — the cervix opening — starts 4 to 24 hours before birth. Once the water bag or feet appear, a heifer should be making clear progress within an hour and a mature cow within 30 minutes. If she is not, examine her; if a problem cannot be corrected within 20 to 30 minutes, or you cannot safely deliver the calf, call your veterinarian immediately. The placenta normally passes within 8 to 12 hours; after 12 hours it is considered retained.

Livestock Gestation Tracker is an organizational aid, not veterinary advice. Reference dates vary by animal, breed, pregnancy and management conditions. Use your own records and your veterinarian or a qualified livestock professional for care decisions.

Questions people ask

How many days is a cow pregnant?

About 283 days for most beef breeds, within a usual range of 279 to 287 days according to University of Nebraska–Lincoln Beef. Dairy breeds differ: USDA data put Holsteins near 278–280 days and Brown Swiss near 287.

How do I calculate a calving date from an AI date?

Add 283 days to the insemination date for the expected date, 279 days for the early edge and 287 for the late edge. A cow inseminated on May 12, 2026 is expected around February 19, 2027, between February 15 and February 23.

How do I work out calving dates when the bull ran with the herd?

Use the day the bull went in and the day he came out. Add 279 days to the first and 287 days to the last; every cow settled in between should calve inside that window. The calculator does this when you fill in the “last exposure day” box.

Do bull calves take longer?

Slightly. University of Nebraska–Lincoln Beef notes that bull calves are carried a little longer than heifer calves, and USDA research on dairy cattle reports single heifer calves born one to two days earlier than bulls, and twins about five days earlier than singles.

Is the calving date guaranteed?

No. It is a planning reference from date arithmetic. Breed, sex of the calf, twins, the cow’s age and condition all move the real date, so watch for the signs of calving across the whole window.
